What a birth chart is
A birth chart is a map of the sky drawn for one moment and one place: the day, minute and town where you were born. The Sun, the Moon and eight planets are placed on a circle of twelve zodiac signs, and the circle itself is divided into twelve houses — sectors that astrology links with different areas of life.
Your chart is calculated once and stays with you for life. Astrologers read it as a description of tendencies: how you tend to behave in different situations, what you need to feel settled, how you show your feelings and what draws you in your work.
What a birth chart does not do is predict events or decide for you. It is a language of symbols that helps you see yourself from the outside and put into words what you may have felt for a long time. That is how COSMEYA treats it: as a way to understand yourself better, not as a verdict.
What a birth chart shows
A chart has many elements, but six of them give you the core. For each one it matters what it depends on: some are set by the date alone, others only by the exact time and place.
Sun
The core of your character: what fills you up and where you recognise yourself. Your Sun sign depends only on your birth date — it is the “star sign” of horoscopes.
Moon
Emotions and needs: how you experience feelings and what makes you feel safe. The Moon crosses a sign in two to three days, so your birth time matters for it too.
Ascendant
The sign rising on the eastern horizon: your manner, first impressions, the way you step into new things. It changes about every two hours, so it needs the exact time and place.
Planets
Mercury is thinking and speech, Venus is affection and values, Mars is energy and action. Jupiter and Saturn describe growth and responsibility; the outer planets set the backdrop of a generation.
Houses
The twelve sectors of the chart: self, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, partnership and more. A planet in a house shows where its theme shows up most.
Aspects
The angles between planets: conjunction, trine, sextile, square, opposition. They show how different parts of your character support each other — or argue.
The short COSMEYA reading is built on the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Venus, Mars and the MC — the career point at the top of the chart. The chart wheel in the result shows all ten planets and the aspects between them.
How to read your chart: an example
The parts of a chart are best read together — the meaning comes from the combination. Here is how that works on a made-up chart.
The Sun in Leo speaks of a need to be seen, to create and to inspire. The Moon in Pisces adds sensitivity: this person picks up on other people’s moods and tires quickly of rudeness. Virgo rising brings outward reserve and precision: on first meeting they seem more modest and composed than they really are.
Together it might read like this: a bright, creative nature that opens up slowly and protects its vulnerability behind a businesslike front. The chart’s hint: give yourself room to express yourself, and choose people you don’t need to stay on guard with.
The COSMEYA reading follows the same idea: the texts for each placement are grouped into three themes — character, relationships, work — so they read as one story about you.
If you don’t know your birth time
You can calculate a chart without a time — the “Time of birth” field is optional. The planets are then calculated for noon, and the Ascendant and houses are left out: they depend on minutes.
- Works without a time: the signs of the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and all the outer planets, and most aspects.
- Needs a time: the Ascendant, the MC, the houses and the exact degree of the Moon.
- If the Moon changed sign that day, we show both options and both texts — you can pick the one that resonates more.
Where to find your time: on your birth certificate (some countries record it), in hospital records, in the civil registry archive or from relatives. Even an approximate time — “around six in the morning” — is better than nothing: the Ascendant can be refined later.
How COSMEYA calculates your chart
The calculation is astronomical and runs right in your browser. Your birthplace is turned into coordinates, and your local time into Universal Time, taking historical time zones and daylight saving into account.
| Parameter | How we calculate |
|---|---|
| Zodiac | Tropical — the standard in Western astrology |
| Houses | Placidus; above 66° latitude, where Placidus is undefined, Porphyry |
| Planet positions | Apparent geocentric, on the true ecliptic of date |
| Accuracy | Checked against Swiss Ephemeris: within 20 arcseconds |
| Time zones | Historical rules for each date and town |
The biggest factor in your result is the accuracy of your birth time: the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes.

Questions & answers
Planet positions are checked against Swiss Ephemeris and differ by no more than 20 arcseconds, which does not change the sign or degree. Your birth time matters far more: the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes.
Yes. Without a time we calculate the signs of the Sun, Moon and planets, but not the Ascendant or houses. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, we show both options. When you find your time, enter it to see the Ascendant and houses.
A birth chart is calculated once, for the moment and place of your birth, and describes your lasting tendencies. A horoscope talks about the current period: a general one is written for everyone of one sign, a personal one compares today’s sky with your chart.
The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. Astrology links it with how you come across and the first impression you make. It needs your exact birth time and place.
No. The short reading opens as soon as the chart is calculated. You only need an account if you want to save your chart in your personal account.
